"Your vehicles are ever restless. Every vibration in the vehicle produces a corresponding change in consciousness. Is there any way to check these vibrations, to study the vehicle, so that consciousness may be still? One method is the repeating of a mantra. A mantra is a mechanical way of checking vibration. Instead of using the powers of the will and of imagination, you save these for other purposes, and use the mechanical resource of a mantra." -- ANNIE BESANT

One of the fundamental laws of nature is the law of cause and effect. The scientists have exploited this law in many a material field. Spiritualists used the same law in the field of emotion and mind and found that this law of causation applies in all its detail in this plane also. This is known as the Law of Karma.

It is believed that if a man does good deeds, lives a virtuous and benevolent life, he would go to heaven after death. A wicked man is repeatedly admonished to improve his life, otherwise, he is threatened to go to hell. Where is this heaven and hell? Does the soul after death roam in some such ‘Loka’ country, city or village? The mind, naturally, becomes inquisitive about these facts. Man wants to know the truth in this matter because science has contributed immensely to the advancement of knowledge.

In this advanced age, the cosmic universe, terrestrial planets, asteroids of the solar system have all been discovered. The existence of such a ‘Loka’ as professed by various religions and sects, does not appear to be feasible in the light of modern cosmic knowledge about the solar system, constellations, galactic circle etc. Then, are heaven and hell mere imaginations? Is there a sure way for salvation or for being wrapped in misery? To get the reward of one’s own actions? Is there no system in the vast kingdom of God for materialising the deeds which remained unrewarded during his life? If there is no medium for salvation or for getting misery, how will people reap the harvest of their good or bad acts? These and similar other questions create considerable confusion, as to how, the founders of religion could raise such a big structure when heaven and hell did not exist at all.

We should know that both heaven and hell do exist. But through them there exists an organised system of getting the results of good and bad actions. It is doubtful whether heaven and hell relate to any specified space or place. This ‘Loka’ relates to our emotional outlook. In both these Lokas, there exists a proper system wherein man’s actions are duly rewarded. It works on an automatic system and does not call for interference from any external force. This is practical as well as logical. In human life good and bad deeds are performed every moment. Hundreds of files of punishment and reward for acts done in one-day can be prepared. This number will go up countless for acts of entire life. There are more about 6 billion's of people live on this earth. Maintenance of the voluminous account and records and enactment of laws for punishing and rewarding the people for their actions will be such a huge task that more than people those living on the earth will be required to be engaged. Thus the existence of any other external force to regulate the system of rewarding and punishing people for good and bad acts done by them is not only difficult but impossible.

Man has been provided full freedom to do good and bad acts according to his will, along with an automatic system which reacts and produces the results of such actions. This is what is happening in this entire creation. Seed sown in the ground sprouts, as soon as it gets water and manure the plant starts becoming a tree. God is omnipresent. It can, therefore, be said that this work is being done by God. But instead of bothering himself, God preferred to fulfill his purpose of rewarding and punishing people for their actions by introducing an automatic system. Grains are poured in the grinder on the top and flour comes out at the bottom. Oil drips below the crusher as soon as it is filled with mustard seeds at the top. Meter in the motor indicates the mileage of journey performed. This is an age of automatic machines. Big printing presses print thousands of sheets at a time. The machine works automatically as soon as it is set in motion. Raw material placed on one side is converted into finished good on the other. The system of ‘karmaphal’ is also of the same type. Evil deeds definitely result in unhappy consequences, which is called hell and good deeds result in a happy out come, which is called heaven. This happens automatically. The body manages its own affairs in this respect. If one remains sitting, his belly will bulge, he would walk with difficulty and suffer with indigestion, palpitation of heart and similar other ailments will overpower him. Work is worship. One who is unscrupulous and sits idle is irreligious. Sitting idle is a bodily sin which results in fatness coupled with other physical ailments. Over-eating leads to stomach ache, headache and sleeplessness. Take liquor and get intoxicated. Take poison and die. Do not take bathe and suffer from bad smell, lice, scabies etc. Do regular exercise and become strong. Dietary restriction safeguards the health. The body itself makes all these arrangements without any interference from outside. One’s own will to do work, and the will of that automatic Godly – power, are both interrelated. It is not possible for any one to escape from the results of the work done. A lazy man remains a pauper. The doors of progress are closed to an idler. An irritated man is surrounded by enemies. A loafer is deprived of friends. Associates of dishonest persons leave him. The impertinent meets disdain. An extravagant man becomes indebted. Every one experiences this penal system working at every step. A man becomes respectable, famous, resourceful, prosperous, successful and reaches at the top by possessing noble virtues, honest temperament and doing excellent work. He himself remains peaceful and makes others happy. This is the way in which the theory of Karmaphal’ of heaven and hell works. The delinquent devilish sinners become culprits, undergo punishment and are hated by every one. Being deprived of affection and co-operation, they roam like devils and ghosts of the burial ground. This hateful life is nothing else than hell. Benevolent, virtuous and godly persons are considered as God and even after death they are respected, worshipped and their tales inspire and enlighten countless people. This achievement should be called nothing else than heaven. We can thus always see the system of heaven and hell working. This is what is known as the theory of ‘karma-phal’.

Several persons become expert in concealing their real position. They commit sins, deceive others and try to find ways to escape punishment. This cunningness is very common these days. It has more disadvantages than advantages. The advantage is that they escape being caught and punished by the authorities. If sin is not exposed, the person committing it escapes being hated and rebuked and neglected by others. But manipulation for the concealment of evil deeds gives birth to a strange mental conflict and suffocation. Evil deeds coupled with the act of concealment are like ‘bhang’ mixed with opium. The frame of inner mind is such that if cannot digest such suffocation. Vomiting is a must on consuming copper sulphate. Eating jamal-gota is bound to result in diarrhea. If raw mercury is taken, it will erupt in the form of abscesses. There are such poisons which cannot be digested. If they are digested they create terrible diseases and life becomes a curse. In the same way evil deeds coupled with their concealment create such a poison which cunning persons can hide for a long time but they cannot pursue the inner self to digest it. The smoke of cigarette can be filled in the stomach but it cannot stay there for long time, it will come out from the nose, if the mouth is shut. A balloon filled with air on being submerged in water emerges and jumps up with the same force. Latent sins erupt dangerously at any time in the form of physical ailments and mental disorders and it is difficult to know the reason behind them. Medical treatment does not work. Such internal disorders remain latent and make a man hollow from inside. Man continues to suffer mental disorders and physical ailments so long as the sins committed by him are not expressed and penance is done by him to make amends for the mischief already done. Emotional inner conflict has been regarded as the main cause for incurable diseases like cancer, heart attack, high blood pressure and brain hemorrhage. Various western psychologists are of the view that if the inner self of these persons had been looked after and properly treated, they would not have fallen prey to such calamities.

What really happens is that man tries to find out the cause of his ailments outside and runs after medical treatment. Like irrigating the leaves instead of roots the doctors, too, these days resort to outer treatment. On psychological examination of such an ailing persons it will be revealed that though alive, he is undergoing hell. The accumulated misdeeds and the resultant anguish and ups and downs of sinful feelings inside a man are not apparently visible from outside but they manifest them selves indirectly in the garb of various ailments.

It should be known that these sins do not remain confined in causing mental and physical agony but they create several invisible calamities in the atmosphere. Some people keep a fire-pot with burning coal in a closed room to guard against cold. Apparently, protection from cold is immediately felt but the room is filled with such a poisonous gas that they die in sleep. Here there is no external injury, no fever, no brain hemorrhage, and the cause of death is not seen by the naked eye, but those who are conversant, know it well that the burning coal emitted poisonous gas which caused death. There are several unknown indirect factors which suddenly bring calamity but they have no direct connection with the acts done at that time. Similarly, sometimes success is achieved; facilities are availed of, without exerting or making any effort. These inconsistent obstructions or help come in the form of divine will and destiny. Their obvious cause is not perceptible. It may take time. A man becomes doubtful, if work done today is not instantly followed by its result. He may think that evil deeds have escaped punishment or good work has not been rewarded, but this is not so. As the secret behind this fact is not known immediately in due course several unscrupulous, impatient persons start loosing faith. But if one keeps patience it will appear that it is certain to get good or bad results of the work done in this life itself or in the next one. This world rests on this system. If this system becomes doubtful, it would create such havoc and confusion that it will not be possible to manage anything anywhere. And then, none would be afraid of committing sins nor would any one bother to become virtuous. One’s own way of thinking manifests itself at every step in the form of happiness, satisfaction and peace on doing good work. If one helps a needy person in distress at the cost of his own work he would feel within himself immense happiness and bliss as if cool and fragrant air currents are emanating from sandal trees. And contrary to this, if a person harms others by theft, dacoity or immoral means, he would feel within himself, on account of self-repentance and restlessness as if bitten by a bed-bug and flea bite. In fact, this self-satisfaction and self-condemnation makes the inner-self strong or weak and on this basis countless doors of progress get open or closed. The inner-self of one who commits sins becomes weak day by day and he loses confidence not only on others but also on himself. A man may amass abundant wealth, but he cannot get peace if he is devoid of his inner strength. The mental state of self-condemnation can be called hell, because the torture of worries and annoyance is so great that it can easily be compared with those described as horrors and ordeals of hell. One who regards every young women as his daughter, considers other’s wealth worthless, leads a contented simple life by meager, self-earned income, maintains an upright character and keeps an attitude of affection and co-operation towards others will find divine elegance and, inner fountain of nectar, humming and flowing within himself. Man may get the results of his good or bad deeds even after death. The condition between death and birth might be happy or troublesome and the next birth might be excellent or inferior. In the system of Karmaphal, a necessary corollary of heaven and hell is the existence of life after death. But in this life also one gets immediate results of good and bad actions and the automatic system of heaven and hell compels us to remain under control and lead a prudent way of life.
